Type of Music Videos
Each music video can have elements of performance, narrative and conceptual. The genre of music i am studying is pop music which would mainly include elements of performance and narrative in there music videos.

Performance Music Video: Get Low- Zedd and Liam Payne
A performance based video shows the artist/band/group performance throughout the song and sometimes can play throughout the whole video. It is the cheapest and easiest type of video to make, providing you can find a suitable location. A lot of different camera shots and angles would be used in a performance video because it makes the shots look different and keeps the video interesting. There is also a down fall to performance videos because if the shots are similar, the location looks the same and the artist doesn't move it could lead to the artist finding the video boring which would not be good publicity for the song or the artist. In this video, Liam and Zedd are seen performing in different areas of London which meets the elements of performance and is interesting for the audience to watch as there are different settings, a wide use of shots and movement. This video includes elements of performance as there are back-up dancers which shows principles of rehearsal for the performance in the video.
Narrative Music Video: As long as you love me- Justin Bieber and Big Sean
A narrative based music video contains mostly footage that attempts to tell a story through the moving image. The lyrics are often reflected within the narrative of the video. This narrative can be like a mini film, with a beginning, middle and end. Another way narrative videos can be used is promote a film with clips from the film including telling a story.
This music video follows the story of Justin falling in love but being told he can't be with the girl because of her overprotective father. The video is mainly based on narrative but has a few shots where there is performance from Justin and dancers. This video is easily recognised as a narrative video as there is a clear story-line and the actual song doesn't begin until 1.30mins into the video which showcases them trying to establish a story before the song starts.
Conceptual Music Video: Boys- Charli XCX
Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually unusual or obscure, even surreal for an audience. The unusual content is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at what or who is on the screen.
This video is the closest video to conceptual based i can find for the pop genre. This video is based on the idea that females are usually seen as objects whereas this is breaking that and showing the males as the objects for a different approach. Also, by displaying the males like this it illustrates them as just something to look at which is usually how women are illustrated like in pop music videos. The conceptual idea works effectively because in the video they use male celebrities which will attract the target audience of young female adults/teenagers. It follows the principles it should keep the audience entertained, focused on the concept and be based on who is in the video.
